Approved Check Pilots (ACPs) administer Pilot Proficiency Checks (PPCs) and/or Line Checks in Canada, under CAR subparts 702, 703, 704 and 705. This certified ACP Course (since 1990) complies with TP6533 10th Edition Rev 1, and prepares candidates for the initial or renewal accreditation process with Transport Canada. Initial ACP accreditation and subsequent renewals are based on the need at a particular location or area within a Transport Canada region. Individuals seeking to obtain an ACP accreditation are required to contact their regional Transport Canada office or National Operations to initiate this determination.

    F A Q

    1. How much experience do I need to become ACP?
You must have a valid Canadian commercial pilot licence or ATPL with a minimum of 3000 hours of total flight time, 1500 hours as PIC. The ACP Manual (TP6533, Rev 1) list the several other requirements at 4.1, General ACP Requirements, page 31.

    2. Will I automatically become an ACP if I take the ACP Course?
No. Taking the course is one of the requirements listed in ACPM 4.1. Contact the TC a regional or HQ ACP Program representative before investing in an ACP Course. The ACP Course is valid for 12 months to get the delegation. Once you are delegated, the ACP Course is valid for 36 months.

    1. I lost my medical. Can I become a Simulator-Only ACP?
Under certain conditions, it is possible to remain ACP in simulator only if you were a valid ACP (with medical) at the time you lost your medical. You cannot initiate the delegation process without a valid medical.

    2. Can anyone become Freelance ACP?
Before issuing an ACP Delegation, Transport Canada Issuing Authority must establish need at a particular location or for specific aircraft types. This applies to initial and renewal applications. The determination will be based on the number of PPC expected to be conducted annually by the ACP candidat (usually minimum 6 PPCs/year) and the number, proximity and availability of other ACPs able to provide the same service.

    3. I am Type A ACP with a major Canadian airline. How can I become a freelance ACP in CAR 703?
TC National Operations usually limit your ACP Delegation to the airline you work for. Nevertheless, your ACP Course is valid. Contact your local TC Region ACP Representative (list above) to discuss the possibilities to be delegated again, under the Region's authority. You would likely end up with two ACP delegation letters in this case.
