CFIT Avoidance Training

TC-recognized CFIT Avoidance Training
when part of the Air Carrier's
Pilot Training Manual

Aim

Despite all the modern navigation and GPWS systems, the largest single cause of aviation fatalities is "Controlled flight into terrain", or CFIT. A CFIT accident is an event where a mechanically normally functioning airplane is inadvertently flown into the ground, water or an obstacle. CFITs occur in all weather conditions, at any time of the day.

A the end of this course, the pilot will be able to recognize the two principal reasons why CFITs occur: Flight crews' lack of vertical position awareness or, lack of horizontal position awareness in relation to the ground, water, or obstacles.
